Security guard accused of shooting supervisor pleads not guilty

The security guard charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot his supervisor last month pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday.

Doran Long’s preliminary hearing is set for the morning of Nov. 15. Wednesday he remained in county jail on $5.3 million bail.

The 50-year-old Long, whose crew cut had grown disheveled after almost two weeks in custody following the Oct. 19 shootings that led to his arrest, appeared in a Richmond courtroom Tuesday morning before Judge Peter Berger.

A pair of thick-rimmed glasses hid the Concord man’s expression while public defender Michael Lepie entered a not guilty plea.

Long, who has no prior convictions, is facing eight felony charges, including three counts of attempted murder, three counts of shooting into an unoccupied vehicle and two counts of shooting an inhabited dwelling.

If convicted Long could spend life in prison.

On the night of the rampage, police say Long shot up his Concord neighbor’s vehicle and house, inside of which were five people, including a 9-year-old child, before driving to Crescent Park apartments in Richmond, where he worked as a security guard.  There, police say, he opened fire on the security office, wounding supervisor Chester Dancer.

The security firm, Personal Protective Services, did not respond to calls for comment. Nor did EAH Housing, the corporation that operates the complex.
