About Us

Richmond Confidential is focused on Richmond, California, as well as the West Contra Costa Unified School District and its communities. It is based at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Journalism. It functions as a news lab for student reporters and as a news source for the Richmond community.

Since its founding in 2009 through a grant from the Ford Foundation, Richmond Confidential has been a resource for people who live and work in West Contra Costa County. We cover governments, businesses and neighborhoods — from City Hall to West Contra Costa schools, from the Annex to Hilltop, Point Richmond to the Iron Triangle, El Cerrito to Hercules. We also monitor institutions and industries such as the Chevron Refinery, the city’s largest employer and taxpayer.

We love to interact with our readers through Facebook, X (@riconfidential), Blue Sky (richmondconfidentl.bsky.social) and Instagram (@richmondconfidential). And we rely on you to tell us what’s happening in your community.

Please send your tips, concerns and comments to us at richconstaff@gmail.com.

Ethics Policy

Richmond Confidential follows the Society of Professional Journalists’ ethics policy, which states: Public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. Ethical journalism strives to ensure the free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. An ethical journalist acts with integrity. The Society declares these four principles as the foundation of ethical journalism and encourages their use in its practice by all people in all media — seek the truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, be accountable and transparent.
