Three arrested in connection with May homicide

on October 3, 2013

Richmond Police homicide detectives arrested three suspects Wednesday on murder charges stemming from a May shooting.

Richmond residents Kevin Thongsay Vilayngeun, 33, Brittany Bernard, 25, and Boonsy Manivan, 31, were all arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and robbery. The arrests are related to the shooting death of Rodel Sarmiento, 43, of Daly City, according to Sgt. Nicole Abetkov, RPD public information officer.

On the morning of May 4, officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 2000 block of Chanslor Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle crashed into a building and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, who was later identified as Sarmiento, according to Abetkov. Sarmiento later died from his injuries.

No one witnessed the incident, and no one came forward with information, Abetkov said. Homicide detectives, led by Detective Laquana Caston, were able to use evidence gathered at the scene to identify the suspects and make the arrests, according to Abetkov.

All three suspects have been charged by the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding the case may contact Detective Caston, or call the RPD non-emergency line at 510-232-8477.
