Amateur boxers get into the ring at Richmond Police Activities League event
on July 5, 2012
On Saturday, the Richmond Police Activities League (RPAL) hosted 16 bouts of amateur boxing at the Richmond Auditorium. Each fight lasted three rounds, with the winner receiving a trophy. The runner-up got ribbon and medal. Ages of the fighters ranged from 9 to 31 years of age.
Two of the fighters, Angel Soriano, 11, and Eduardo Garcia, 14, train at Richmond’s D.F. Boxing gym on 13th Street. The gym, and its owner, Ulises Soriano, is renowned for placing Richmond fighters into the professional ranks. On this date, both Soriano and Garcia lost by split decisions.
The next RPAL amateur boxing event will be held on October 6 at the Richmond Auditorium. For more information about the boxing program contact Mark Torres at (510) 621-1227 or email him at mtorres@rpal.org.
