In Salesian High School’s homecoming game Saturday, the Pride beat the Kennedy Eagles 42-5. The Pride, led by running back Marciel Malic’s three touchdowns and 179 yards, took an early lead with two touchdowns in the first quarter and, by halftime, they led 35-0. The Eagles’ points came from a field goal and an intentional safety by Salesian in the second half of the game. Kennedy’s closest chance came in the second quarter, when Kennedy senior Kenny Walker dashed 80 yards from the Kennedy 20-yard line to the end zone. Everyone on the Kennedy benches stood and cheered wildly — until they realized that the touchdown did not count. An audible groan could be heard through the audience as the referees announced that Walker went out of bounds while avoiding a block on the 15 yard line.
The allures of gang life, especially for young adults and children with little else – no guidance, no job, no future – are similar to those of boxing: Power, respect, purpose. Boxing, though, offers those draws paired with a positive outcome, instead of violence.
After labor talks between NBA players and team owners failed to break a lockout last week, some basketball fans may be wondering if they’re in for a dry winter. But for those living in Richmond, there will be a new game in town this season. Starting in November, the Richmond Rockets, of the American Basketball Association, will be playing regular games at the Civic Center Memorial Auditorium. The Rockets will be the first professional basketball team in the city, and…
After two cross-town rivals battled it out in a lopsided first half of football Friday night, the Richmond community took time to remember two former instructors by naming two annual game trophies in their honor.
In a game that marked the debut of two new coaches and a new trophy — the Sylvester Greenwood Cup — Kennedy ran all over Richmond Friday night at Kennedy High to give Mack Carminer a blowout 73-18 win in his first contest against the cross-town rival Oilers. Sophomore Jonathan Whitley and senior Kenny Walker led the way, and after a 30-yard pass from quarterback Octavious Holley to Whitley, Kennedy led 19-0 early. The Eagles repeatedly drove deep into Richmond…
Tashaka Merriweather steps onto the artificial turf field on a brisk, Wednesday afternoon. Sporting his customary black shades and windbreaker, Merriweather starts directing this team to begin the practice drills with the loud, shrill sound of his trusted whistle. As a coach, Merriweather wants to bring the values he learned as a college football player — hard work and good technique — to help his team succeed in games and in the classroom. It’s evident at practice as he works…
Kennedy High had plenty of time to think about the second half of its football game against Miramonte – a full weekend, in fact, after the game was postponed Friday night by lightning and not resumed again until Monday. And although the Eagles lost to the Matadors, 42-22, they finished that second half strong to carry some positives into this week’s rivalry contest against Richmond.
The Richmond Oilers lost to the Mt. Eden Monarchs in a dramatic contest that was undecided until late in the game. An effective Oilers aerial attack couldn’t keep pace with the Monarchs’ unyielding ground game, losing 34-29 in a nail biter. The running game was so effective that the Monarchs didn’t attempt a single pass the entire first half. Richmond got off to a promising start as Oiler Quarterback Daniel Esparza connected with Isaiah Brown for a 35-yard strike and…
Oakland A’s all-star starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez and reliever Fautino De Los Santos wowed the kids and parents at “Backpacks 4 Their Future,” an event that helped hand out 500 backpacks filled with binders, pencils, rulers, scissors and other school supplies to Richmond schoolkids.
