Tashaka Merriweather steps onto the artificial turf field on a brisk, Wednesday afternoon. Sporting his customary black shades and windbreaker, Merriweather starts directing this team to begin the practice drills with the loud, shrill sound of his trusted whistle. Kennedy High had plenty of time to think about the second half of its football game against Miramonte – a full weekend, in fact, after the game was postponed Friday night by lightning and not resumed again until Monday. And although the Eagles lost to the Matadors, 42-22, they finished that second half strong to carry some positives into this week’s rivalry contest against Richmond.
The Richmond Oilers lost to the Mt. Eden Monarchs in a dramatic contest that was undecided until late in the game. An effective Oilers aerial attack couldn’t keep pace with the Monarchs’ unyielding ground game, losing 34-29 in a nail biter. The running game was so effective that the Monarchs didn’t attempt a single pass the entire first half. Oakland A’s all-star starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez and reliever Fautino De Los Santos wowed the kids and parents at “Backpacks 4 Their Future,” an event that helped hand out 500 backpacks filled with binders, pencils, rulers, scissors and other school supplies to Richmond schoolkids.
