Eagles bulldoze Indians

Kennedy High Eagles fans had a lot to cheer about Friday night, as Kennedy dominated John Swett High School’s Indians 42-6. After an evenly matched first quarter, with the Eagles leading by a point 7-6, the Indians began to slip when a fumble abruptly stopped their momentum down the field and was recovered by the Eagles’ Danny Pompa for a touchdown. During halftime Head Coach Mike Carminer motivated his players, repeating the phrase “We haven’t got to our level of…

Saint Mary’s pulls through, defeats Kennedy

The Kennedy High Eagles played hard Saturday, but couldn’t put up the defense needed to keep the Saint Mary’s College High School Panthers down. The Eagles stayed ahead of the Panthers for all but the last two minutes of the game, when a turnover led to the Panthers’ game-winning touchdown. “We didn’t have the defense, and we didn’t execute,” said Eagles head coach Mack Carminer. Further complicating the 35-31 game was the ejection of  Carminer for improper equipment. Several Eagles…

Oilers suffer another defeat

The game between Richmond and El Cerrito on Thursday evening was decided much before the final whistle. It was an exercise in waiting for the final score and for the Richmond High fans, the score was dismal: El Cerrito 58, Richmond 6. On the sidelines during the game, the Oilers had six players to the Gauchos’ 21. On the field it was 11 against 11, but the Oilers seemed to be outnumbered there as well. The Richmond defense seemed to…

Richmond, meet your new basketball team

Fourteen-year-old Abdul Black loves basketball, but he’s not worried about the NBA lockout. He’s following a different league this season, and he’s already got a favorite player. “I’m here to see ‘Little Pat,” he says, pointing toward a group of young men gathering at the bar at the Boiler House Restaurant Tuesday night. You can’t miss them – since, for one thing, they’re taller than everyone in the room. They’re the Richmond Rockets, the city’s new American Basketball Association professional…

Richmond Explorers set bar high at state competition

Generally, when you sit a 19-year-old at a table with a reporter, it’s a classic recipe for one-word answers and evasive glances at the ground. Yet, Francisco Rodriguez stands to shake my hand. He looks me directly in the eye, and speaks clearly, in full sentences. “That’s everything they teach you in the post,” Rodriguez says. The Explorers, a police-directed extracurricular program that grooms youth not only for law enforcement but also for life, hasn’t just given Rodriguez social tools…

Kennedy Eagles overwhelm St. Patrick-St. Vincent Bruins

Kennedy’s teamwork and speed proved too much for visiting St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Saturday in 43-27 Eagles victory. Senior quarterback Octavious Holley threw three touchdown passes to three different players, sophomore running back Jordan Whitley ran for another, and senior wide receiver Kenneth Walker provided a spark on both ends of the ball with touchdowns on an 82-yard run and a 40-yard fumble recovery. The Eagles ability to spread the ball around overwhelmed the Bruins. “It’s by design and opportunity,”…

After three years of dreaming, Spokeshop bike lounge opens its doors

It’s not really about bikes for Brian Drayton.

This week, he’s opening what he calls Richmond’s first full service professional bike shop, the Spokeshop Bike Lounge. But, says Drayton, “I don’t want to be a bike shop owner. Retail’s not my thing.” Really, he’s out to change the world – or at least Richmond. Spend fifteen minutes with him, and you begin to think he might just pull it off.

Richmond players persevere, but Hercules takes the win

The Richmond Oilers took one on the chin Friday night, when the Hercules Titans consistently ran the ball, scoring early and often in a game the Titans took 50 to 14. Both teams scored running touchdowns in the first quarter, and the score was even until Hercules snagged its second touchdown in the second quarter. Richmond tried an onside kick, but their plans backfired, and the ball consistently bounced Hercules’ way on several occasions. The Oilers’ defense was no match…

Richmond fighters shine at amateur exhibition

The boxers fought tough. The crew produced a top-notch event. The problem was few people showed up. “This is a good venue for Richmond,” said Jesse Coleman, an employee who travels with United States of America Boxing, the governing association of amateur boxing. “They did a good job of organizing, and they’ve got good fights. They just need an audience.” They, the Richmond Police Activities League, were expecting over 1,000 spectators. But on Saturday afternoon only about 180 filed into…
