On Thursday afternoon at Kennedy High School, players, parents, and coaches filed in to the library to celebrate signing day for two football athletes. A signing day refers to the day that a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent to play college football with a school. While other sports such as football and basketball often get the most attention, the track and field team at Richmond’s Kennedy High School has been the most successful in improving each season and sending student athletes to higher education. So far, the Eagles track and field team has reached the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships for three straight years in the 110-meter hurdles, placing sixth the past two years.
This year the Sea Scouts, a national organization focused on teaching young people knowledge of seamanship as well as maritime history and skills, will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Richmond’s roller derby team, the Wrecking Belles, boasts the most wins the Bay Area Derby Girls league’s history. The women kicked off their season at the end of February. The Rockets just keep on climbing. Just days after the new American Basketball Association power rankings placed the Richmond Rockets in eighth place nationally, the first-year squad went out and played like a title contender, running the visiting Port City Pirates ragged in a 109-85 win at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium Saturday.
