Gunshots halt Richmond homecoming

Gunshots fired close to Richmond High School on Friday night put an abrupt end to the school’s homecoming dance and football game against the Kennedy Eagles. Eight minutes were left in the game and the Eagles were up 16-6 when a gun was fired near 23rd and Maricopa, a stone’s throw from school grounds. Police stationed at the school for the game responded immediately, but by the time they got to the scene, everyone had scattered, Lt. Michael Booker said. No…

Eagles, Oilers battle for Greenwood Trophy

The Kennedy Eagles (4-4) travel to Richmond Friday night for the second annual Greenwood Trophy game. Last year’s inaugural showdown saw the Eagles pound the Oilers to the fine tune of 73-18. Oilers head coach Tashaka Merriweather said he doesn’t want the trophy to stay with Kennedy too long. “Last year they beat us pretty bad and they didn’t step off the gas pedal,” he said. “I don’t hold grudges but I never forget things like that.” If anybody knows…

Oilers Win

On a cloudy, misty evening in Albany, nearly two years of waiting—and losing—finally ended. The Richmond Oilers bolted to a decisive win over the Albany Cougars — 38-18. The Oilers have long been plagued with a small varsity team, which gets smaller as the season wears on and players are sidelined due to injuries and grade problems. This night there were only 18 suited up to play, many of them took turns on offense and defense—making the long awaited victory…

Kennedy Eagles soar into first place

The Kennedy Eagles soared into first place in the league at their Homecoming game on Friday night, crushing the John Swett Indians 30-7. Late in the first quarter, the Eagles’ Takkarist Mckinley scored on a short run, putting Kennedy on the board. They failed to make the two point conversion, but they were up, 6-0. It stayed that way through much of the second quarter as each team failed to make third down conversions. A small but spirited Kennedy crowd…

Eagles crush Cougars for second league win

The Kennedy Eagles shut down the Albany Cougars 36-0 on Friday for their second win in a row. “I think they are starting to remember what they are playing for,” said Head Coach Mack Carminer. The scoring came quickly for the Eagles. They punched in a touchdown from the 2 yard line just five minutes into the game. On their second possession, number 81, Raysean Walker, caught a long pass at the 40 and ran it in for the second…

Eagles and Oilers load up the bus

The Kennedy Eagles (2-4) and Richmond Oilers (0-6) hit the road Friday night, as both teams continue their quest for a league title. Eagles head coach Mack Carminer said his team doesn’t have a big head just because of last week’s 40-7 thumping of De Anaza, and expects Friday night’s game against the Albany Cougars (0-6) to be just as challenging. “We got one-of-five wins complete and this week we’re going to try and make it two,” he said by…

Sprinters run the distance

Forty-four junior varsity runners pummeled the Marina Bay hills Thursday afternoon at a high school cross-country meet. Coaches lined the turns of the course’s last 200 meters, calling out words they hoped would catapult their runners across the finish line. The coach yelling “Don’t let her pass you,” as her runner was being overtaken by Kennedy’s Danaya Giddens, though, wasn’t in luck. Giddens had disappeared around a bend before the last word left the coach’s mouth as the Kennedy sprinter…
