Richmond police confirm the identity of last Thursday’s liquor store fatality

on October 21, 2015

Richmond police confirmed that a man who died last Thursday following a brief scuffle in a liquor store parking lot was Eric Rismay, 66, of Richmond, and that another Richmond man, Roshon Brown, 26, is in custody on manslaughter charges.

Video from the security cameras at Shop and Save Liquors shows Brown and Rismay exchanging words inside the store, then walking just outside into the parking lot on Cutting Boulevard and 15th Street, where Brown appears to slap Rismay in the head. Following the slap, Rismay walks back into the store and collapses on the counter.

Police arrived shortly after 7:30 p.m. to find Rismay unconscious but still breathing. Brown was waiting outside. Paramedics arrived and lifted Rismay, strapped to a gurney, into the back of an ambulance.

According to Officer Mike Sagan, the paramedics were trying to resuscitate Rismay as the ambulance left for Kaiser Medical Center in Richmond, where Rismay was pronounced dead.

Police arrested Brown at the scene without incident.
