Richmond High Oiler Jorge Diaz doing well after concussion

on October 24, 2011

Richmond High School junior Jorge Diaz, who suffered a concussion at last Friday’s Oilers football game at Pinole Valley High School, is doing well, according to coach Tashaka Merriweather.

The game was put on hold several minutes when an ambulance came and paramedics took Diaz off the field.

But, “He is doing fine — he was actually released from the hospital that night,” Merriweather said. “He joined us as we were returning to the campus.”

“He’s okay — it wasn’t as serious as it would have appeared,” Merriweather said, cautioning it will be up to the doctors to make a final determination.

“You’re always kind of shaken up when one of your players goes down and they’re not able to walk off their field under their own power,” Merriweather said. He said he it wasn’t the concussion that brought in the ambulance but caution for any possible neck injury.

This week is a bye week, but the Oilers will return to the field November 4, when the team will play in Berkeley.
