Bandwidth: Oakland’s Religious Girls shred their gospel
on March 8, 2011
This three-piece experimental pop band from Oakland — and no, Religious Girls are not actually girls — is the next feature in our “Bandwidth” video series on East Bay music.
With two sets of keyboards, two sets of drums, and three microphones among them, the current cast of musical multitaskers — Nicholas Cowman, Guy Culver, and Christopher Danko — has been together just over a year. They will be releasing a two-song album this April, available on vinyl and as free digital download, put out jointly by LA record label Fun Forever Campaign and Sacramento label MythLab. “Midnight Realms,” named after their East Oakland practice space, is Religious Girls’ second release, following their 2009 debut, “Open Your Heart to Fantasy.”
Watch the full live performance.
We filmed Religious Girls perform “Charity” — one of the songs from their upcoming release — live at Studio SQ, a San Francisco recording studio. Their dreamy synths, impossible rhythms, and deceptive name inspired us to flood the room with fog and bathe them in pink and purple. We caught up with them later at their practice space to talk money, moms, and well, girls.
