As I drove down 23rd Street on my way to Erica’s Beauty Salon on Saturday morning, I wondered how many people had already canceled their hair appointments. The clouds were still slumbering at 9 a.m., but the morning news report had assured everyone that heavy showers were inevitable. Rain equals bad hair.
If you’re on San Pablo Avenue this morning, look around — Occupy Richmond may be marching by. About a dozen protesters representing Occupy Richmond gathered Wednesday morning on the corner of San Pablo Ave. and Macdonald Ave., before marching down San Pablo toward Oakland City Hall. (photo by: Maggie Beidelman) About a dozen protesters — including Mayor Gayle McLaughlin — turned out Wednesday morning to join a day of action called by protesters at Occupy Oakland. With all that goes on in the adult world, relating to a miniature version of one’s self is a lot harder than the uninitiated might think. Something as simple as helping a 9-year-old with a writing assignment can be daunting after a day’s work; the “simple” one-sentence instruction often reads as if it were some kind of esoteric answer to the meaning of life. When Joshua Genser purchased 10 acres of industrial land on Richmond’s north shore in 1999, he had a vision: A Silicon-Valley-like park, complete with palm trees, gleaming glass, and a shoreline where employees and the public would take in views of the San Pablo Bay. Genser wasn’t alone. Other parties bought land in the area that year, too. Joe and Heidi Shekou (JHS) purchased 14 acres on the same industrial subdivision. The Murray family bought 55 acres next door. Some…
Artist cj grossman, a new resident of Richmond, works mostly in storybook illustration and small altars. For the SOMArts Gallery’s “Day of the Dead: Illuminations” exhibit, which runs from Oct. 8 to Nov. 5, grossman created a much larger installation dedicated to her sister, the late Dorene Rae Grossman Weil (1946-2001). In her piece, grossman incorporates elements of Dore’s life with symbols from the Day of the Dead. The resulting installation is a powerful celebration of the artist’s sister.
