D’Neise Robinson

D’Neise Robinson has something to say. Tornadoes ain’t got sh*t on me. I’m poverty. Her peers snap their fingers to show they’re impressed by her skills. In the front row are some of her closest girlfriends, ready to perform their poetry at the RAW Talent slam. A few days earlier, a fellow slam student named Dimarea Young was gunned down close by. Police crowded his neighborhood, middle-aged men openly regretted their involvement in the crack epidemic, and Young’s girlfriend shrieked…

Birds on the Bay Bridge

Of all the birds that nest on or around the Bay Bridge—gulls, terns, pelicans, pigeons, falcons, hummingbirds—Lauren Bingham is most concerned with the cormorants. It’s not that they’re worse, bird by bird, more onerous or unruly than the other birds; it’s just that there’s so many of them. Standing on the unopened new span of the Bay Bridge, halfway to Yerba Buena Island, she points at the steel latticework right below the road deck on the old bridge, then gestures…

De Anza splits season series, defeat Kennedy 12-4

Kennedy Eagles’ head coach Tim Logan sat on a milk crate near first base during the top of the third inning Friday afternoon and watched his team fall behind 10 runs to the visiting De Anza Dons. While Logan sat outside the dugout keeping the book, no permissible players sat in the dugout with rally caps on rooting for their teammates to make a comeback. Fragmented by poor academic achievement, the first-year head coach now faces a different kind of…

Restoration Hardware moves for bigger horizons

Upscale luxury furniture retailer Restoration Hardware has outgrown its former Marina Way South location, and now has put down roots in a larger warehouse at 2900 Atlas Road. Plans started last November for the big move, about the same time the national furniture chain went public. The company, headquartered in Corte Madera, signed a 10-year lease for the new Atlas location. Now the business can enjoy the space of the 200,000 square-foot building, when before it had to share a…

Oilers take season series, defeat Eagles 7-6

The Richmond Oilers’ baseball team has two wins this year and they’re both against their crosstown rival, the Kennedy Eagles. On Wednesday the lineup with “R” on their hats used eight walks and one hit-by-pitch to squeeze out a 7-6 victory. Eagles’ head coach Tim Logan said he pitched first-time player Gerald Cannon because five of his regulars had to hang up their cleats for academic reasons. “I like what I saw,” Logan said of Cannon’s two-plus innings of curveballs,…

Richmond school is gifted thousands of free books

A program that gives away free books to school children has touched down on the West Coast, and one of Richmond’s schools was the first to host the event Wednesday night. Through the Newark-based program, My Very Own Library, more than 2,000 books were available for all students at Making Waves, a charter middle and high school that’s made up of students who are almost all low-income and qualify for free lunch. Every student received a certificate earlier in the…

At heated meeting, council discusses gun control, mural approval

In a contentious meeting Tuesday night, the city council took on gun control and support for a program that works to curtail violence in Richmond after a deadly week that ended with three dead in the city. Councilmember Corky Booze set the tone for the meeting early on, when he took issue with Mayor Gayle McLaughlin’s re-ordering of agenda items. “This is just to show how we let our personalities get ahead of what’s supposed to happen in our city,”…
