Lady Eagles apply no mercy rule, win by 53

After clobbering the Antioch Lady Panthers by 53 points Friday night, Kennedy Lady Eagles head coach Rae Jackson told his players to go home, eat something good, take a hot bath and to jump into bed. Saturday afternoon would be no different as the Lady Eagles (5-2) play their fourth game in five days. Sitting at 2-9 heading in to Friday night’s game in Richmond, the Lady Panthers were stung from the very beginning by Kennedy’s swarming defense. After one…

Eagles show defensive front strategies against Campolindo

When Jose Ponce stepped off the bus at Campolindo High Wednesday night he knew he was going to have a good game. But what the Eagles goalkeeper didn’t know was that he’d have to duel a Cougars player eye-to-eye during a penalty kick. With the clock winding down and the score already 1-0 in favor of the Cougars, a Kennedy defender committed a foul inside his own box. After a brief discussion by the referee about what happened, a Campolindo…

After years of dark, Richmond’s main street gets festive lights back

With the flick of a switch Wednesday night, Macdonald Avenue transformed into a downtown vision that many in the city have long wanted to see. “I always dreamed of having lights on Macdonald,” Finance Director James Goins said, standing at the corner of Macdonald and 11th. The East Bay Performing Arts Center and Richmond Main Street Initiative collaborated this year to host the annual Downtown Holiday Festival. This was the first time the newly renovated arts center held the event,…

Lady Eagles race past KIPP King

The hottest show in town isn’t Hollywood’s new James Bond movie, but rather the Kennedy High girl’s basketball team. And with an 85-39 defeat of KIPP King of San Lorenzo Monday night, the Eagles didn’t disappoint. Now entering its sixth year as a charter school, KIPP King (4-1) never stood a chance. By half time Kennedy (4-1) raced off to a 20-point lead. Concerned that players were focused more on individual stats than team play, Eagles assistant head coach Tim…

Oilers turn corner, but fall to Mustangs

On Wednesday night the Richmond Oilers (0-2-1) lost to the Monte Vista Mustangs (5-0-0) by the score of 2-1. The game was played under a sea of fog as players’ battled visibility and a slippery field the entire night. In the first half Monte Vista came out kicking and took a commanding 2-0 lead. Prior to their contest against the Oilers, the Mustangs had never given up a goal, and had outscored opponents by 13 goals. After 40 minutes this…

Latina Center celebrates Christmas with food, dance and giving

On Saturday more than 300 people lined the long hallway at Barrett Avenue Christian Church to celebrate gift giving. At one end of the spectrum was a room full of children getting their faces painted, while at the other end parents sat and listened to the musical group Rondalla del Sagrado Corazon. It seemed like there was something for everyone down the block-long hallway—from free flu shots sponsored by Walgreens, to the sale of organic health and beauty products. And…

Mayor honors memory of homicide victims

Mayor Gayle McLaughlin invited the community to the Richmond Public Library Friday night to honor the memory of this year’s homicide victims. More than 30 people attended the event. Chairs formed a circle providing a public forum for the mayor and the attendees who had stories to share about the year’s 18 homicides. “It’s people owning the neighborhood together,” McLaughlin said on ways to decrease crime and violence in the community. She focused on communities taking personal responsibility, being more…

RAC’s Holiday Arts Festival goes green

Richmond Arts Center has been holding holiday arts festivals for more than 50 years. But this is the first time its festival has gone green, thanks to volunteers who spent a week in November making decorations for the Dec. 2 festival out of old newspapers. This shift from new to recycled materials is innovative, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. And it represents a more dignified final use for newspapers than serving as birdcage liner for the family parrot. “People have donated…

Fremont takes Kennedy in season opener

It was just the first game, but Kennedy head coach DeUndrae Perteete has already found something to work on: rebounding. The team had just eight boards the entire night. And because Kennedy (0-1) forgot to bring some Windex and paper towels to clean the glass Wednesday night, Fremont (1-0) rolled on to a 57-39 victory. The quarter-capacity crowd saw Kennedy use its speed and hustle to stay close for most of the game. And after three quarters the Eagles only…
