on September 23, 2016
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office has formally charged 19-year-old Richmond resident Dawaun Rice in connection with the death of Javonte Prothro, who was shot multiple times in his car at 1025 S.47th St. on Monday and died at the scene.
On Wednesday, Richmond police arrested Rice as a suspect in Prothro’s death. On Thursday, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office charged Rice with the murder of Prothro.
Today, Rice appeared at the George D. Carroll Courthouse in Richmond before Judge David E. Goldstein. Deputy District Attorney Jun Fernandez filed a notice of intent to not seek the death penalty in the case. Attorney Sarah MonPere of the Office of the Public Defender declared a conflict that would require a new attorney be assigned from the Alternate Defender Office. The arraignment was subsequently postponed to next Friday, September 30.
The Richmond Police Department’s partnership with the community was essential to identifying a suspect in this case, said Lieutenant Felix Tan in a press release about the case issued on Thursday.
“We would like to acknowledge and thank community members for their support and the partnership we have that helped solved this homicide,” said Tan.
RPD has not released information on the suspect’s motive, or any further details on the investigation.
