Rapping O’Neill

A mix of beats, rapping and acting turned Eugene O’Neill’s drama masterpiece, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, into a bracing new blend of hip hop and theater.
In collaboration with the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts and the National Parks Foundation, 14 Richmond High School students re-wrote and remixed O’Neill’s story of self-discovery into their own work of performance art. According to director Eugenia Ives, the students’ creativity shows a remarkable skill in “understanding and making a classic piece of literature relevant” to their lives in Richmond.
O’Neill is America’s only Nobel Prize winning playwright. He lived in Northern California for most of his career.
