Weekends in Richmond: Laotians celebrate the New Year

on April 16, 2012

On Sunday, hundreds of people turned out at Wat Lao Rattanaram, Richmond’s Laotian temple, to celebrate the New Year. Also known as Songkran, the New Year is a three-day festival in mid-April celebrated by many from countries in South and Southeast Asia including Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar. As part of the celebration there was a kick boxing performance, Laotian music and dance, and dishes upon dishes of traditional food. Enjoy these photos from Sunday’s festivities.
