Man shot, killed Wednesday near downtown

on July 20, 2011

A man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon near Nevin Park, and police are scrambling to apprehend a suspect.

The victim has been identified as Daryl Russell, 20. The killing occurred near the corner of Fifth Street and Nevin Avenue, in the Iron Triangle Neighborhood.

Lt. Bisa French said Richmond Police were investigating reports that a dark green sedan was seen fleeing the area after the killing, which occurred in broad daylight near the popular downtown park. Russell was walking near the corner when an assailant approached.

“We believe a male got out of the vehicle and shot (Russell), got back in and left in a green four-door sedan,” French said.

Asked whether there were any witnesses, French said, “It was broad daylight, there were people in the area.”
