Coffee Drinks
Not yet decided. The coffee itself will not be taxed, but by adding sweeteners, it may fall within the definition of a sugar-sweetened beverage. It's still undecided how and whether to apply the tax to businesses like Starbucks, where the consumer decides how much syrup and sugar to put in his/her drink.
100% Fruit Juice
No. Juices with naturally-derived sugar will not be taxed.
Sports Drinks
Yes. Sports drinks like Gatorade would be included in the tax because they are sweetened with sucrose and glucose-fructose syrup.
Diet Drinks
No. Drinks with non-caloric sweeteners will not be taxed.
Soda
Yes. Soft drinks like Coca-Cola are what Councilmember Jeff Ritterman says he intended the tax to target.
Baby Formula and Dietary Supplements
No. The city attorney issued a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Policy that lists baby formula and dietary supplements as beverages exempted from the tax.
