Established Richmond bakery Zoe’s Cookies turns out the sweet stuff

A few blocks up the road from Rosie the Riveter national park, cookies, brownies, and fruit bars are whirling around in convection ovens at Zoe’s Cookies & Other Delights. You can find Zoe’s Cookies at places like Berkeley Bowl; but most of the company’s baked goods are shipped directly to businesses that serve or sell them to clients and workers.

Volunteers fan out across Contra Costa to tally County’s homeless

Dozens of community volunteers fanned out across Contra Costa County early Wednesday morning to help with the county’s 2011 homeless count. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires all cities and counties receiving federal dollars for homeless services to conduct a count at least every other year.

Richmond wastewater treatment plant to resume operations amid controversy

The wastewater treatment plant in Point Richmond will soon restart full operations, said Aaron Weiner, district manager at Veolia Water, the company that runs the facility. Solid waste processing at the plant was shut down in early October, 2010. Since then, the company has been hauling about a hundred trucks of solid human waste each week to an East Bay Municipal Utility District facility in Oakland.
