What?! You think we should set young people on fire to teach them to prevent violent assaults? Children who treated violently learn to treat others violently. We need to teach our children empathy, compassion and respect for all living beings. That starts at home and continues through schools, youth groups etc. The only connection NCLB might have (and I am elementary teacher affected by NCLB) is that in stressing academic testing above all else, it may encourage teachers to gloss over teaching compassion and respect.

parents – stop letting your kids bully you, teach them respect, love, compassion, right now they are toxic with greed, violence and disrespect. They need an ass kicking of love.

I’m as big a critic of NCLB as anyone else. But blaming this incident on a federal education program is absurd. Too many self-styled radicals obsessed with trivial national issues. Too little interest in doing the hard work of building community at the local level.

Your city is a mess. Clean it up.

I think the MyStrength Campaign sounds like a terrific idea. One of the things that needs to be touched on is the crowd mentality that can foster such attacks and how to combat it. It’s not “cool” to be against something all of your peers seem to be for, even when you know it is wrong. I’m sure almost all of that crowd had cell phones. Two hours??!!!! and no one person thought to call 911!!! Is No Child Left Behind teaching our children to be sheep???

Days after the Richmond High rape, crisis center director Rhonda James said that she had a training that could have prevented or lessened the severity of the attack on the teenage girl. The October rape horrified the local community and drew national attention to the city. Richmond residents were stunned by reports of up to 20 bystanders who witnessed and cheered on multiple assailants as they raped a 16-year-old girl for more than 2 hours.
